This would be useful in parts of New York and New Jersey suffering the after-effects of Sandy. I had no power for 2 days but other areas are in absolute carnage. My heart goes out to all those who are still suffering.

From PSFK.com:

Georgia Tech has received a $900,000 grant from the Office of Naval Research to develop a robot that can complete missions in dangerous situations by utilizing what’s found around the area. Professor Mike Stilman, team leader of the project, refers the robot as “MacGyver bot” and explains that:

Our goal is to develop a robot that behaves like MacGyver, the television character from the 1980s who solved complex problems and escaped dangerous situations by using everyday objects and materials he found at hand.

The MacGyver bot can be placed in disaster and war zones to help find people and rebuild the areas. The robot will have the basic cognitive processes to take advantage of arbitrary objects around the environment and use them as tools. There’s still a long way to go before we will see a prototype MacGyver bot being implemented in the military service. The next step for the Georgia Tech team is to develop a software to run simulations on a computer, before installing and testing the software further in a Stilman’s Golem Krang humanoid robot.

Love stories about robots actually making a difference (no offense to the dancing robots).

From Mashable.com:

Hector is an in-home caregiver for elderly people who have mild cognitive impairment. It provides reminders for everyday tasks, like taking medications, calling people back and storing grocery lists. For individuals experiencing occasional memory loss, it’s no doubt useful to have Hector collect wallet and keys. Hector can even detect falls and respond to verbal commands. He’s like a walking, talking smartphone, with a much larger touch screen and smarter “brain.”

Remember those hydrobots in Terminator: Salvation that hunted down the resistance? Yeah…that’s it!

From Ubergizmo.com:

The price of freedom is eternal vigilance, and thousands of men and women have given up their lives to protect the freedom of this great country known as America, and no doubt they are more and more technologically inclined these days, with robots playing a huge role in assisting the entire military. DARPA’s latest foray to the underwater scene would be the DASH (Distributed Agile Submarine Hunting) robot which is said to be able to “sniff” out all subs, regardless of whether they are diesel-electric or nuclear, as it combs through both deep and shallow water carefully.

DASH can be described as an underwater version of a satellite which can operate at extreme depths in the open ocean. Once fully developed and operational, the DASH robot, otherwise known as “subullites,” will be able to see action in deep sea enemy sub stake outs. These underwater satellites have a major advantage of their own – they are highly mobile, quiet and unmanned. Should DASH detect an enemy sub, a tiny autonomous vessel or “X-ship” will be deployed in order to remain on the trail of those subs that could prove to be a threat one of these days. Better safe than sorry, no?

A restaurant located in Harbin, China has recently adopted a full robotic staff to serve its customers. This robot-friendly restaurant features 18 different robots that are capable of doing everything from cooking to serving. Equipped with motion detectors, these innovative new workers are capable of expressing ten different facial expressions and able to converse in basic Chinese. Once a diner walks in, an “usher robot” directs him to an empty booth while reciting a clever greeting: ‘Earth Person, Hello, Welcome to the Robot Restaurant.’

Depending on what the customers order, cooking robots such as the “dumpling robot” and “noodle robot” gets to cooking. And finally, when the dish is prepared, a robot waiter, which runs along tracks on the floor, carries it from kitchen to table.

Designed by Harbin Haohai Robot Company, the robotic dining experience costs approximately 5 million Yuan (about US$800,000). Take a look at the Robot Restaurant below.
